These facilities provide convenience and a sense of community, as students live in close proximity to campus amenities, including libraries, sports facilities, and study spaces.
  • Off-Campus Rental: Renting a private property off-campus is a popular choice for international students who prefer more independence and flexibility. Australia has a vibrant rental market, with apartments, shared houses, and studio flats available for lease. Websites and real estate agents can assist in finding suitable rental properties, and students often share the cost by living with housemates.
  • Homestay: Homestays involve living with an Australian host family, providing an opportunity to experience local culture and practice English language skills. Homestay hosts provide furnished rooms, meals, and support to students, creating a nurturing environment for international students to adapt to their new surroundings.

These facilities often offer fully furnished rooms or apartments with shared kitchens and communal spaces. PBSA options may include various amenities such as study areas, social spaces, gyms, and laundry facilities. They can be found in close proximity to universities and educational institutions.
  • Temporary Accommodation: Students may need temporary accommodation upon arriving in Australia before finding a more permanent solution. This can include staying in hostels, budget hotels, or serviced apartments for a short duration until they secure a suitable long-term arrangement.

Post-study work opportunities in Australia

Australia offer attractive post-study work opportunities for international students, allowing them to gain valuable work experience and potentially extend their stay in the country. The Australian government recognises the benefits of retaining skilled graduates and has implemented programs to support their transition from education to the workforce. Here are some key aspects of post-study work opportunities in Australia:

  • Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): The Temporary Graduate Visa allows international students who have completed at least two years of study in Australia to work in the country temporarily. There are two streams within this visa category: the Graduate Work stream and the Post-Study Work stream.
  • Graduate Work Stream: This stream is suitable for students who have completed a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list. It allows them to work for up to 18 months in Australia after graduation.
  • Post-Study Work Stream: Under this stream, international students who have completed a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree from an Australian education provider can work between two and four years in Australia, depending on the level of their qualification. This stream is particularly beneficial as it provides an extended period of work rights to gain valuable professional experience.
  • Transition to Permanent Residency: The post-study work experience gained through the Temporary Graduate Visa can enhance an international student's eligibility for permanent residency in Australia. The work experience and skills acquired during this period can contribute to meeting the requirements of various skilled migration pathways.
